How to Make Bannock Bread On Coals in the Bush

If you’re out in the wilderness but got your basic survival stockpile ingredients with you, you can make bannock bread without any utensils. In fact, the only “gear” you’ll need is a zipper bag! This results in an ash-covered “Damper Bread” which can be buried in smoldering coals or ashes to cook.

This is a basic type of bread but one that will give you enough carbs to continue to survive in the bush. You can make your own variations depending on the seasonings you happen to have, but rest assured it will takes good enough without them.

Ingredients

This is what you’ll need:

  • one cup of flour
  • 1 tsp of baking soda
  • and 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • water

Instructions

Step 1. Mix all of the dry ingredients into a zipper bag:

Step 2. Add water, and continue to mix until you get a dough-like consistency. One cup of water would probably suffice for the amounts mentioned above, but the consistency of a dough is what you’re after.

So long as it’s too dry, keep adding a little bit of water and mix it well. Then a bit more, and so on. If it’s too runny, you probably added too much, so hopefully you have some flour left to add.

Step 3. take the newly-formed dough out of the bag and start kneading it until it’s about a quarter of an inch thick. It should look like this:

Step 4. Place dough on coals or ashes.

Step 5. When one side is cooked, flip it upside down to cook the other side. And that’s about it! Your bannock bread will look and taste amazing!
